Have you ever wished you could slow down your time? Or at least find a way to slow down your career mind?

I’m a Yin Yoga teacher, but when I’m not practicing yoga or taking classes, I’m one of the least “yin” people you’ll ever meet. I own a small business that works to keep a yoga studio afloat during a pandemic and also a mother with helicopter trends (at least according to my sister-in-law).

That is precisely why practicing Yin Yoga has become such an important tool for me and many others. It is a practice that invites us to slow down, to fully immerse ourselves and to find ourselves in the present. Just like us. No agenda. No judgment. No effort to be one thing or another. We just are.

When we are present in this way, space and time have a way of changing. We grow up. And this felt experience is a calming energetic tonic for the racing mind. When we leave a Yin practice, we take away a memory of this expansive self that helps put everything else into perspective.

There is much we can do to cultivate yin qualities such as acceptance, calmness, harmony, and depth, whether in ourselves or in our students. We can support an incarnate presence by encouraging curiosity and giving permission and giving time to explore. And we can choose our words with art to help bring about a sense of ease, either during our practice or in life.

Words are energetically powerful. The verbs listed here resonate very differently from the average vocabulary we think, speak, and absorb while in our usual way of “doing things” throughout the day. With our words and the spaces that contain them, we have the power to create a completely different state of being. Take a deep breath and let those words reach your body.
