A question that is on the minds of many: What is the difference between “modern” breathing and pranayama? Let’s face it.

Ravi: Pranayama is the yogic science based on the expansion of Prana Shakti, our vital energy. Breathing is a tool to improve the quality and quantity of Prana in the body, but Pranayama is more subtle than breathing. When we are working with Pranayama we are working with energy channels, called Nadis. These Nadis are the channels through which our energy flows, they exist in our body, although they are not physical, you cannot see them.

Modern breathing generally focuses more on the physical body and lung training, physical endurance, and calmness of mind. Pranayama tries to work the inner body, has a stronger focus on the subtle dimensions we cannot see, and has a deeper connection to our physical, mental, and spiritual existence.

Pranayama is also known as Antar Yoga, which means “Inner Yoga”. Asanas represent the “outer yoga”, Pranayama is the inner yoga.

Breathing helps the body maintain this vital force, stimulates each organ to function properly and increases our level of consciousness. Stress, poor health or certain thoughts can cause blockages in our system. Working with the principles of Pranayama can help cleanse our Nadis to ensure that energy can flow through our system as it should be.

The result is feeling lighter, fitter and healthier, both physically and mentally.

Iour new Pranayama course focuses on immunity. What are the basic principles Pranayama that helps increase the strength and endurance of the immune system?

Ravi: Breathing is our body’s main tool for our health. It is the main tool for life; when our breathing is gone, life is gone. Pranayama calms and heals the nervous system, provides more oxygen to the blood, which in turn strengthens the immune system. Working with our breath to improve the circulation of our Prana Shakti can help solve all kinds of body problems, improving immunity, not only physical but also mental.

For those who live in colder climates compared to those who spend the winter in warm places, do pranayama techniques differ or does it have a more universal approach?

Ravi: There are a couple of Pranayama that work best in specific weather conditions, for example Sheetali and Sheetkari Pranayama are meant to cool the body as well as Chandra Bhedi Pranayama. I recommend not practicing them in colder weather. Generally, when you enjoy practicing Pranayama outdoors, whether it is very cold or windy, or on the contrary with a lot of heat, it is better to go indoors for your practice.

Should we practice more pranayama in the winter?

Ravi: Just like we eat food every day and sleep every night, we really should practice Pranayama every day. Then it goes from being just a practice, to becoming a lifestyle. Pranayama regular practice is amazing for staying healthy.

However, adding Pranayama to your life at any time will certainly help boost your body and mind when we feel more tired and lethargic and will help us stay healthy in the season when we are most prone to viruses. .

Can you name a situation or event in which you applied the pranayama technique to overcome this experience?

Ravi: I went through a time when Pranayama helped me heal. I had a serious car accident in late 2020, which almost took my life, and I spent over a month with an intensive care fan. Pranayama played an important role in my recovery to regain life and health.

But to be honest, a common Pranayama practice has impacted my daily life to the fullest long before. Ever since I became aware and Pranayama became a part of my daily life, it has helped me to understand who I am, what I am doing, why I do it, all this made it very clear. Clarity is a comfortable way of life.

WL: Do you have a favorite technique that is essential in your pranayama practice?

Ravi: Nadi Shodhana Pranayama – Alternative breathing through the nostril.

This is one of the Pranayama that can help clear up many problems, both mental and physical. If you apply this Pranayama correctly on a daily basis, there are so many benefits, too many to list here. It will provide immediate mental clarity, heal the nervous system, increase energy and strengthen the immune system. You will feel lighter and connected very quickly. By practicing this Pranayama regularly, you don’t even need to do many other Pranayama.

I personally practice Nadi Shodhana every morning at the beginning of the day.
