When we start a new year, January is always the perfect month to mark our intentions and be more aware. It’s especially a fantastic month to be more aware of what we’re introducing into our body. We tend to overdo it during the holiday season with more parties, catching up with family and celebrating with friends. It can be easy to overdo it, especially when it comes to drinking. If you want to get back on track, drinking consciously can be a good place to start.

You may be wondering what conscious drinking means? In a snapshot, conscious drinking is the practice of being aware of why and how much alcohol you are consuming.

There are many health benefits to adopting the principles of conscious drinking, to name a few.

Sleep better. As a conscious drinker, you are more likely to experience fewer sleep interruptions and increased sleep quality. Although when we drink it seems that we fall asleep faster, in the long run, it alters our REM sleep, which is the repairman part of our sleep cycle where we dream and rest most importantly for the day to come.

Less anxiety. Alcohol consumption changes serotonin levels and can make anxiety worse. The less we drink, the less we get stuck in the chemicals in our brain and keep our mood more stable.

Glossy skin. Drinking alcohol can cause two things when it comes to our skin: dhydration and inflammation. Drinking less will make your skin look more hydrated, thicker, brighter and give you less wrinkles!

Ask yourself the right questions

Asking the right questions before having a drink is such an important habit to work with. It will allow you to fully think about your decision before entering autopilot and having a glass of wine or a bottle of beer. Before you say yes to a drink, ask yourself:

Do I feel good about myself?
Am I drinking because I feel like I’m in a good space?
Do I have anything important to do in the morning?
Will this decision empower me the best I can? Or discard my best self?

Experiment with alternatives

There are so many low-alcohol, ABV-free alternatives that will still allow you to drink a drink you love, but without having to feel like you’re missing out and without the big morning hangover! Finding out what alternatives you like and experimenting with or without alcohol is a great way to stay up to date when drinking consciously.

Plan ahead

Check the online menu or call the site in advance and see what’s available, don’t get caught up in a situation where you feel like you have to drink because they don’t have enough alcohol selection or low ABV. Remember that you are the one who makes the decisions when it comes to drinking and you have all the power to make the decisions that will serve you.

Be proud and confident

Be proud and confident in your choice to become a healthier and happier version of yourself. Socializing can be tricky at times, especially when it seems like everyone is drinking, but feel empowered to inform your friends and family about your new lifestyle choice. This allows you to set boundaries and even inspire those around you!
