Wanderlust How to drink consciously according to a London yoga teacher who loves her wine

Hi Wanderlust, I’m Emily here and I really love my wine, in fact I’m qualified for WSET level 2 and I plan to organize my first wine tasting next year. It’s not something you often hear on the yoga scene, is it? Most yoga enthusiasts are usually total (or at least to say they are), and I fully understand! I am totally in favor of “everyone for their own.” I know all the arguments for getting away from alcohol on the spiritual path, and for where I am in my life right now, this is still not something that suits me. Maybe in the future. But for now, let me tell you a little bit about my ever-evolving relationship with alcohol and the conscious drinking tips I’d like to share with you for 2022.

So what you should probably know is that I’m not here to tell you to stop drinking! How could I if I had no intention of doing so myself? But what I intend to do this year is to be even more aware about what I am consuming. I used to be a wild kid, go back to the ski seasons to summers full of festivals and go back to the ski seasons. I’ve had a lot of parties and been very out of control in some places in my life, but I started to find a lot more balance when I discovered yoga and became more aware of my life and everything there was, and most of all what I put in my body. As a result, in the last two years I have become even more aware of my alcohol consumption.

I recently launched mine own study and online yoga community, The Joyful Wild, and I also run two companies, The Yeh Yoga Co i Secret Dawn of London – So you could say I’m a pretty busy and hectic person, and sometimes the stress of it all makes me look for a glass of wine most days. During the depths of the pandemic, when we were #wfh every day, I developed a ritual to drink a glass of wine after I finished work, as a way to relieve the pressure of my 14-hour workday at home .

So here are some of my top tips I’ve made very recently for myself, to take a more conscious approach to drinking, without going over the cold turkey. Enjoy!

Sometimes we seek to have a drink as a ritual that separates our work day from time for ourselves, a way to celebrate, a way to be compassionate, sometimes as a gift, or just because. So grab your most stylish glassware, make some ice (why not crush one, or store fun-shaped ice cubes in the freezer), grab a reusable straw, and get creative with your fruit and toppings . Perform a ritual with the careful preparation of your drink, regardless of what is – like Martini’s non-alcoholic Vibrante Spritz or the low ABV La Vie En Rose.

I find that being so careful in the preparation of any drink means that if after that you are still including the drink in your carefully crafted creation, it is likely that because of all the time you spent creating something special, the drink a little slower. and more carefully than if he had just thrown a little spirit and a little whisk over an old, simple glass … that’s just asking for his neck, instead of savoring them.


If your favorite drink includes a blender you would normally never have straight, just keep it straight. Trust me, try this flavor that you would normally only have with your favorite spirit, it will almost “trick” your mind into thinking you’re drinking, and you’ll also have all those warm, diffuse feelings.

Follow the above rituals to prepare your “mixer only” and take your time. I usually have a sleek G&T without the G, in a large gin glass with crushed botanicals and large slices of grapefruit or some basil leaves. It still has a “taste” like I’m used to (after all, the tonic makes up most of the drink … or at least for most of us it does 😉 and leaves me just as happy).

Bonus tip: if you’re at night and don’t want to make a big fuss about not drinking, give up the rounds and tell people you’re doing yours. Especially in the UK, there may be a bit of a culture of “wanting” people to drink with you, so if you find yourself telling people not to drink tonight comes a lot of pressure, to keep them out of the way. your case, tell them. it’s your normal mixer you choose, and then just order the mixer when you go to the bar. And later, you might think about why you’re dating these people in the first place if they don’t accept your choice on a night out.

Being more aware of what you are consuming does not mean that you have to give up completely. There are so many amazing alternatives to drinks or low or non-alcoholic drinks that are delicious. Try to carefully switch between your regular drink of your choice and then a non-alcoholic version to keep track of your drinking.

Or, if your favorite drink isn’t so easily replaced with a non-alcoholic alternative (non-alcoholic wines, I’m looking at you, hot grape rubbish), try alternating between a drink and a soda. Pattern it, play it, and distribute your conscious drinks over a longer period of time.

Keep a diary or phone note of all the alcoholic beverages you drink during a normal week, and then when you look back the week, ask yourself if you liked and / or needed each one. When we look at the big picture, it may be easier to use your strength in those cases where you choose to cut or reduce your drinks.

Ask yourself why they are are you drinking Are you going to savor it and really enjoy it right now, or is it to deviate from something else? If it helps your mind, is there anything? something else can you actively do it to involve your brain? We often pour a glass to indicate the end of the workday (especially true for our many group stays at the WFH, right ?!), but there may be a different way to welcome the start of the workday. time for yourself at the end of the day?

See if you can take a moment to think about why you should have a drink. If it’s customary, let’s see if you can pick up new habits! Maybe go for a walk to separate the end of your day from the FMH, change your clothes, dance around the house, anything that will help you signify in a more conscious way that the work is over and is now yours. moment.
